This temple is situated in the Annamalai University Campus in Chidambaram. It is a roadside temple just after the Annamalai University main campus in the Chidambaram-Annamalai Nagar Road. |
Architecture

It is small temple facing east. Just opposite to the temple we have a "Nagalinga Tree" and a pond. This temple is well maintained by the locals. The main deity is the form of Linga. Inside the temple we have the sculptures describing the history of this temple. This temple also has the deities of Meenakshi-Sokkanadhar, Subramaniar, Somaskandar, Sidhivinayagar. |
History

It is believed that the Lord Shiva & Lordess Parvathi supposed to have appeared in the form of hunter and blessed Arjuna with "Pasupathastram", so the Lord here is called as Pasupathanadhar. Arjuna meditated on Lord Shiva for pasupathastram. While Arjuna was in meditation he was distrubed by a wild boar called "Mookkaasuran". Arjuna getting disturbed chased that wild boar. This place is called "Ussuppoor". Arjuna fought with Lord Shiva, who was in the form of hunter at Eesanporveli. Lord Shiva broke Arjuna's bow at Villeruttaan Kuttai. It is also believed that the Gyanasambandar is supposed to have stayed here and visited Chidambaram daily from here. |
Festival
|
The event of Lord Shiva fighting with Arjuna and blessing him with Pasupathastram is enacted as festival in the tamil month of Vaikasi(May-June) on Star Visakam. The other festivals here are Navarathiri, Sivarathiri and the Mondays of tamil month Karthigai(November-December). |
