In olden days, a boy was born to Renuka, the wife of Sage Jamadagni. Due to Sage Bhrigu's curse, the boy was born on Earth. He was named Ram. Once, his father ordered him to chop off the heads of his mother and his brothers. The boy did as he was ordered. His father became happy and blessed him that he will be victorious in his every war. After some days, Sahasrabahu, who was an offspring of Karthaveerya Arjuna dynasty, killed Jamadagni. Angered by the death of his father, Ram chopped off the thousand hands of Sahasrabahu and killed him. He became a sinner. He performed penance and asked Lord Indra the way to be freed from his sins. Lord Indra replied that if he give his virtue of worshipping Lord Shiva to the sinners, he will be freed from his sin. Ram did as instructed. As this Linga was worshipped by Ram, it was named as Rameshwar. Whoever worships this Shivalinga, will be freed from his Brahmahasti Dosha. If we worship the Linga on Krishna Paksha Chaturdasi during Ashwini month, will be freed from our sins and will reach Heaven after death. |
