During the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva himself received the Kalkoot poison and then ordered Shipra river to drop that poison on the Shivalinga present in Uttam Kameshwar at Avanthika Nagari. Whoever worshipped that Linga died due to that poison. Once, Brahmins visiting holy places worshipped that Linga and died. Confusion prevailed due to the death of that Brahmins. So Lord Shiva himself came there and gave life to that Brahmins. The Brahmins requested the Lord to remove the poison from that Linga as it caused harm. Lord Shiva promised that whoever worships this Linga, his family will be fulfilled with money and happiness. As this Linga helps family, it came to be known as Kutumbeshwar Mahadev.
