History

Once when Sati fell into the yagna and was spoiling her body, Lord Shiva got worried and sent his followers to stop the yagna. Virabhadra, a staunch follower of Lord Shiva rampaged that area. All the Devas were shivering because of his anger and they worshipped Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu attacked Virabhadra. After that incident, Lord Vishnu and his Sudarshana Chakra went to Lord Shiva. Seing Lord Shiva angered, Lord Vishnu, his Chakra and all the Devas panicked. Lord Shiva ordered his followers not to allow any of the Devas into heaven. All the Devas worshipped Lord Brahma. He instructed them to worship the Linga in the east of Kapaleshwar in Mahakal forest. All the Devas went to Avanthika Nagari and worshipped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva became happy and allowed the Devas to enter the heaven. As this Linga helped the Devas to enter into the heaven, it was known as Swargadwareshwar. Whoever worships this Linga on Chaturdasi and on Mondays, goes to heaven directly after death.
