Once a boy named Suvarna was born due to the creation of Lord Shiva and Lord Agni. To obtain Suvarna all the Devas, demons and humans fought. Creation was stopped because of this war. Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva to restart the creation. In order to restart the creation, Lord Shiva ordered Suvarna to worship the Shivalinga present in the southern part of Karkoteshwar in Mahakal forest. Due to this, Suvrna will be free from Brahmahasthi Dosha and will be purified. Suvarna did as per Lord's advice and got purified. Whoever worships this Linga will become rich and beautiful and always be the winner. As Suvarna perform Pooja here, the Linga came to be known as Swarnajalleshwar Mahadev.
